Governance
The Board of Directors (“Board”) of GreenMatter, under the leadership of the Chairperson, consists of five members. The Board decides on the strategy upon recommendation by the management team and is responsible for the strategic direction and governance of the organization, based on the principles of good governance.
The Board is supported by a management team which executes GreenMatter’s strategic objectives with respect to major initiatives and programmes, as well as fostering relations with GreenMatter’s key stakeholders.

Chairperson: Shafika Isaacs
Shafika Isaacs is a specialist in digital learning and 4IR in education with a focus on equity, quality and social justice in education and skills development. She is also a community builder and a professional coach. She currently serves as Research Associate and Advisory Board member of the University of Johannesburg’s Centre for Education Practice Research, as a technical advisor on mobile learning and AI in education to UNESCO, and as a Working Group Expert on the UN-linked Broadband Commission on School Connectivity. She has worked on digital learning research, policy and practice in many countries and has built and serviced numerous community and international organisations.
She serves on the governing boards of a few global and local organisations including as Chair of the Telkom Foundation and as Board member of Bridge, an education NGO in South Africa. She has a PhD in Education at the University of Johannesburg, an Executive MBA with distinction at the University of Cape Town, and an MSc at the University of Sussex. She has published widely on digital learning and equity in Africa and in 2017, was awarded the Woman of Stature Woman of the Year Award. |
Derek Engelbrecht
Derek was schooled in the then Rhodesia (now Harare) and obtained his CIS qualification whilst working as both a Government Auditor and then spent ten years as Chief Accountant at the Coca- Cola Bottlers of Salisbury. He also worked as Sales Director of Middelburg Steel and Alloys (now Columbus Stainless) for ten years before a move to Impala Platinum where he was Group Executive for Worldwide Marketing for 23 years. He retired in 2014 and is now a Trustee of the Lewis Foundation.

Vivian Malema
Director for Biodiversity Education Empowerment & Human Capital Development at South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI). She holds a Masters degree in Environmental Education from Rhodes University. She has over 20 year experience in the environmental/biodiversity sector, working with various sectors including higher education institutions, all tiers of government, state entities, NGO's, SETA's, private sector, etc. She was involved in several research and policy development works that led to generation of qualifications, learnerships, training and skills development programmes. Ms Malema in her current role as Director Biodiversity Education and Empowerment led a pioneering human capital development programme, funded through the Presidential Jobs Fund, 'Groen Sebenza’.
Buyani Zwane
Buyani Zwane is an inspirational speaker, network builder, business and life student, educator and leadership development facilitator. He has been engaged in the Human Resources (Capital) Management, Business and Leadership Development for over 30 years with local and international companies. He was co-owner for over 7 years, and served as executive chairperson for 5 years at FranklinCovey Southern Africa, a leadership, training and development company with a presence in 14 Southern African countries and Indian Ocean Islands.

Buyani is a member of the University of Cape Town’s Council where he chairs the Honorary Degrees Committee (UHDC) while also serving in that Council’s Human Resources Committee of Council (UHRC), as well as Selections and Remuneration Committees. He continues to serve as director of Dynamic Leadership Solutions (Pty) Limited and Magnificent Mile (Pty) Limited, while leading Breakthrough Development (Pty) Limited, a Leadership Development and Business Consultancy company founded in 2000 as Chief Engagement Orchestrator (CEO) in addition to serving as independent non-executive director, and chairperson of the board of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority. Since 2012 he has been a fellow of the Africa Leadership Initiative (ALI) and the Aspen Global Leadership Network (AGLN).
A part-time lecturer at the University of Pretoria’s Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) where he earned his MBA with a focus on employee engagement and business strategy Buyani facilitates learning and teaches on Leadership, Management, Change and Organisation Development, and Strategy Implementation while at Wits Business School he teaches on Leadership and Strategy Execution.
He has served as Human Resources Executive and Director, as well as CEO, in the oil & energy industry, financial services, business consulting, gaming and public sectors organisations.

Makobetsa Khati
Makobetsa Khati is the Executive Director of the Research Chairs and Centres of
Excellence (RCCE) Directorate at the National Research Foundation (NRF) and an
Honorary Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of
Cape Town (UCT).
He completed a BSc Medicine Honours and MPH (Epidemiology and Health
Economics) degrees at the University of Cape Town (UCT). He also completed a DIC
and Masters in Molecular Medicine at the Imperial College School of Medicine in
London (formerly the Royal Postgraduate Medical School) and a Doctorate (PhD) in
Cellular and Molecular Pathology at the University of Oxford, Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, where he also held a Wellcome Trust International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for 2 years. In addition, he was a Visiting Scientist at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California, USA.
Makobetsa returned to South Africa in 2004 as a Wellcome Trust and MRC International Research Fellow at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine, UCT. Prior to joining the National Research Foundation (NRF), he spent 10 years at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), first as a Research Group Leader for 5 years and later as Head of Department and Competency Area Manager in the Biosciences Business Unit. Makobetsa has supervised over a dozen Masters and PhD students to completion with publications co-authored by his students as lead authors. He also contributed to books, book chapters, reviews and several original research articles published in peer-reviewed international journals as a primary or principal author. Makobetsa also contributed to, and filed ten international patents of which 5 were issued in different countries and territories. Makobetsa is often invited to international conferences as a keynote speaker.
Makobetsa is a member of the International AIDS Society and the Institute of Directors of Southern Africa, respectively. In addition to serving in steering committees of all the 15 Department of Science and Innovation (DSI)-NRF Centres of Excellence (as ex officio member), he also serves in the steering committee of the NRF-Sasol Inzalo Innovation Programme; the Technical Advisory Committee of the Higher Health (formerly HEAIDS) Board; the Research Outputs Evaluation Panel of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET); Advisory Board Member of the Numeracy and Mathematics Education Chair; Board Member of this company; Current Chair of the adjudication panel for the South African Women in Science Awards and also a member of the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF) Panel of Experts for the NSTF-South 32 Awards.
