Keep It Cool - Climate Change Education Newsletter October Update
University of Fort Hare’s teachers training was held from the 04th – 08th October in East London. The training was attended by 24 teachers from Amathole District in the Eastern Cape. The 5-day training focused on Teaching Climate Change in Natural Sciences and Geography; and teachers engaged in group discussions, designing and presentation of lesson plans. The course provided a good balance between theoretical and practical knowledge. Teachers had an opportunity to plant speekboom plants, test the effect of temperature and salinity on the density of water. The teachers found the training activities enriching and were excited to incorporate these in their teaching when they go back to their schools.
KIC-CCE District Seminars
On the 14th of October, KIC hosted a seminar with partners and stakeholders in King Cetshwayo District in KZN. The purpose of the seminar was to bring stakeholders together and explore opportunities for partnerships, collaboration and actions to support climate change education, and to share local examples of actions/research taking place in the district and the province.
Amongst the participants were representatives from University of Zululand; District Department of Education; Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs; Municipality of City of Umhlathuze and teachers and principals from some of the schools participating in the KIC project.
