KIC November Update
Teachers training
The university of Fort Hare concluded their second round of training on the 5th -7th November in King Williams Town. 15 teachers participated in the three-day climate change course in Natural Sciences and Geography. The training was also attended by partners from VVOB, GreenMatter, WESSA and Department of Forestry Fisheries and the Environment.
A variety of teaching and learning strategies were used by the facilitators in the course to illustrate the possibilities available to teachers. During the sessions teachers worked on their portfolios of evidence; and on the second day of the training, they were engaged in practical sustainability activities facilitated by Mawande Mbola from WESSA. One of the activities the did was learning how to create vertical gardens using recyclable plastic bottles. The participants felt more confident and motivated to teach in a more innovative way about the topic.
Research Seminar
KIC hosted a 2-day research seminar from the 17th – 18th November in Ballito, KZN. The seminar was attended by researchers from the 4 partner universities: Universities of Venda, Fort Hare, KwaZulu-Natal and Rhodes. The seminar was facilitated by the KIC project team; and the comparative research led by Dr Caleb Madikonza and Prof Rob O’Donoghue. The purpose of the seminar was to bring researchers together to share their learnings, experiences and progress on the process tracing research they are conducting in the selected districts. The universities also shared preliminary findings from the data collected to date.
The research goal is to understand and enhance the curriculum-alignment, relevance and effectiveness of continuous teacher professional development in climate change education in the KIC project.
